Ravi Shastri

Australia v India, 4th Test, Adelaide, 1st day

Ravi Shastri: It was the Tendulkar of old

January 24, 2008

Ravi Shastri feels that it was a relatively good day for India, though they would have been happy if they had not lost the wicket of VVS Laxman. Sachin Tendulkar's magnificent hundred was a special one, and now he holds the key in making sure that India reached a commanding total in the first innings of the Test

Reg:Comments by some on Mr.Manjrekar's views on Sachin: is based on his assessment of Sachin's current form & style play. Sachin is still a very good player on current form but he is not dominating the attack as a Great. He appears to be bogged down every time India needs him in a crunch situation. The problem with majority of his fans is they look only at his individual score but not how he scores his runs. The greatness of a batsman is the opposing team must fear him and I doubt, Sachin inspires such fear in strong teams. The way Gavaskar or Richards or Gary Sobers used to instill fear in the opposing teams. When Bradman retired in 1948, one English fan exclaimed " Thank God, We now have a chance ". Does Sachin inspire such a fear. How many times has he rescued India from a very difficult position? What is the use of his 39 centuries when mostly they were not scored in a crisis. How many centuries were scored when needed most. Let us take a comparison with other all time Greats

Tendulkar played magnificent innings and proved Manjrekar wrong when he attempts to justify preference of youth over experience. The performances of Tendulkar and Gandguly have played a key role in recent victories of India over Pakistan and Australia. Tendulkar deserve full credit for being so consisten and magnificent for such a long period of time. But at the same time critic must be cautious in equating his recent performances agains aussies to that of Brian Lara. The analysts must not forget that Tendulkars best performances against aussies have been in matches without Mcgrath and Warne. While Tendulkar is a great batsman is without any shadow of doubt, he still slightly behind Lara in performing against the best in trying conditions. My best wishes for Indian team in this test. I want them to win. Nothing short of that.

It is a pity that our players throw away their wickets even after they have got good starts. The unnecessary cut outside the off stump by Sehwag and the mighty sweep by Ganguly were totally unnecessary shots, at a time when they needed to apply themselves to the task at hand. Another thing that I noticed was the number of times Brett Lee was not getting called for overstepping the line especially by Mr. Bowden. I pointed this out to the Sky Sports team (Farookh Engineer and Neil Harvey) and the replays clearly showed that Sehwag got dismissed on a no ball by Lee. It is high time technology is put to good use in Cricket.

it was a really good performance from indian team today which could have been better. sachin was in really ggod touch and specially the way he attacked spinners brought back the memories of sachin of 90's when he would come out and just look to dominate the bowlers. knocks from vvs and sehwag were also ggod for the cause of team and india must put on a good total for which dhoni needs to fire now. he has been out of touch in this series but i am optimistic that he will not let this opportunity go away. it will be really great to see india win from here and they must win this match

Sachin has proved time and again that he is still the best. WE should let this great cricketer now enjoy his game, i think he has done enough for the game and now its the time for the great man to just play without pressure and enjoy the game. Sachin's the best.

I thought Sachin batted brilliantly he is like an old wine getting better as his age progresses, heartening part in this ininnigs was the sixes, it has been a long while sachin is going over the ropes, this shows he is feeling more confident in the middle , i hope sachin gets a big hundered here, if hogg bowls a big spell it will be cherry on the cake

Hats off to tendulkar who despite averaging in the 20s at this ground has managed to score a century and has a good platform for a double!! i hope so. i agree that 450 is a minimum score. lets hope dhoni can support and introduce a new gear in addition to his 1st & 5th. prob a third. i'm a great dhoni fanbut the task is not done, his team needs him... Die hard India Fan

It is indeed a treat to watch the little genius batting. How many times he has performed to rescue india from precarious positions.Let us pray the almighty to strengthen the little champion's arms to crack many more hundreds and bring laurel to the country
